Is Your Home’s Roof Ready for Snow?

Heavy accumulations of snow during the wintertime wreak havoc on roofs in Stroudsburg, PA. The area averages 33 inches of snow per year, which is about five inches more than the national average. When snow accumulates on your home’s roof, its weight could pose a problem. Our roofing experts offer these tips to help you determine whether or not your roof is ready to handle snowfall.

Check for Damaged Shingles

Asphalt shingles are a common roofing material. Over time, the nails attaching the shingles to the sheathing may pop out of place. Instead of getting up onto your roof to inspect it, use a pair of binoculars to check for popped nails. If you notice any cracked or curled shingles, this is a sign that your roof is wearing out and may need repairs or replacement. Curled or cracked shingles allow melting snow to make its way under the shingles, which could cause a roof leak.

Look for Missing or Loose Flashing

While viewing the roof, also check for loose or missing flashing. These metal strips seal corners and valleys of the roof. Missing or loose flashing allows the water from melting snow to seep into these tiny corners and crevices and leak into your home.

Inspect the Gutters

Your home’s gutters collect all sorts of debris. If they’re filled with pine needles, leaves or other material, they won’t be able to drain melting snow or ice. This could create an ice dam and lead to a major roof leak. If your gutters have pulled away from the roof or have rust or cracks, they may need repairs or replacement.

If you’re not in need of roofing repairs today, we also offer roof maintenance and installation.
